Our Critical Thinking Skills Need To Be Developed First

As I thought through this question, my first inclination was to argue in favour of age limitations on the use of A.I. applications. My thinking was that if A.I. tools were used as a crutch, that would impede our youth’s ability to develop valuable critical thinking skills (reasoning and judgement). Too much A.I. used too early would also impair the development of executive function (planning, self-control, decision-making) and problem-solving through trial and error. These skills are developed by conceiving, producing and presenting work products yourself, and succeeding or failing in those efforts. The learning gained from these exercises is invaluable, but you have to do these things yourself. If A.I. tools do all the work for you, before you’ve established baseline logic, reasoning and judgement, then you’ll never be able to develop your own views and articulate those, without ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini at your fingertips.
But rather than introducing an artificial age restriction of say 18 or 21 years of age, the better approach may be to tier the use of A.I. applications, with more in-depth use as our youth mature, to ensure these critical thinking skills are first developed properly. Use A.I. as a teaching tool to augment our youth’s natural development, as opposed to using A.I. as a substitute or crutch for independent thinking.
However, an argument against anything but full access to A.I. tools, as early as possible, would be that any such limitations would put our youth at a competitive disadvantage. According to a 2026 research report published by the Centre for Universal Education at The Brookings Institute, A.I. usage by students was “very high” in the following countries: South Korea, Singapore, China, India, Brazil and the US, while A.I. usage was “moderate to high” in countries such as Canada and Australia, and only “moderate” in the UK and Japan. This data shows that a global A.I. race is already occurring among our students. Hand-cuffing them by making them wait to use A.I. tools may not be the answer.
But, as mentioned above, unfettered access to A.I. tools during our youth’s formative years pose serious developmental risks. The answer is to use A.I. as a learning aid, but not as a substitute for the basic learning that has otherwise been occurring for decades in school children. So, what is the best way to tier the use of A.I. by school-aged children, so they still develop their thinking skills, logic and judgement ? This is one of the biggest questions facing education today. There is no consensus yet, but many educators, developmental psychologists, and A.I. researchers are converging on a principle:
A.I. should progressively shift from being a teacher, to a coach, to a collaborator as children mature. The key isn't simply the child's age, it's their stage of cognitive development and whether they've already learned the underlying skills without relying on A.I. A possible framework could look like this:

This gradual introduction to A.I. tools, and the progressive increase in use as natural development occurs, protects the formulation of critical thinking skills, but also prepares our youth for today’s workplace.
In researching this article I was reminded of some of the fears expressed by society in the past when prior technological advances were introduced. The concern was that people would become less capable. Examples include: the introduction of the calculator and the invention of spreadsheets. However, history shows the following:
The calculator did not eliminate mathematics; it took care of basic math, and shifted the focus toward higher-level thinking, and enabled more analysis and inferring conclusions based on the compiled data.
With Spreadsheets routine work was completed much faster. Instead of spending hours performing calculations manually, professionals could spend more time: scenario planning; on business strategy; on investment analysis; on forecasting.
In either case jobs were not eliminated but the tasks were completed much more efficiently and more accurately. If A.I. is used the same way, it too will lead to productivity increases.
However, there is a danger to adults who become too dependent on A.I. tools in either their personal or professional lives. Unlike calculators or spreadsheets, A.I. can perform work that requires human intelligence. Psychologists refer to this as cognitive offloading. If a grown adult now asks A.I. to produce all or most of our work product; our emails, reports, and analysis, we may lose the ability to: formulate and defend arguments; to organize thoughts; to write persuasively; and most importantly we may lose our ability to think critically.
The concern is that young people are still developing the mental skills that A.I. can substitute for, but shouldn’t. There isn’t a strong case for a blanket-age restriction on the use of A.I. . However, there is a strong case for age-appropriate use, similar to we have with driving vehicles, social media usage, and education. Let our youth develop and mature naturally, while exposing them to A.I. tools. For mature adults, too much reliance on A.I. can cause the loss or diminishment of critical skills they have spent a lifetime building. Use A.I. as a personal assistant or a tool to aid in your personal or professional activities, don’t offload your thinking to A.I.
